From
Depression to Inspiration
[top]
Lionel Louis Past:
I felt like a failure with no future, no possibility
of achieving anything; just a disappointment to
my family. All this made me depressed and suicidal.
Present: Completed Higher
Nitec in Business Studies (Accounts) at ITE College
Central (Bishan). Am now working towards getting
a degree in business & finance. I’m
proud of: Everything I do now – I’m
so thankful to be alive! But the highlights are
definitely the NYAA Gold (2004), the LKY-ITE Model
Student Award (2002) and the LKY-ITE CCA Award (2004).
What CARE did for me: CARE
believed in me and helped me discover my potential
and motivated me to be a better person. After 2
years in this program, I had no more suicidal thoughts.
CARE has helped me to be all that I am today. Thank
you! |

Kin Leong
Past:
An angry boy with little self-control; gave so
much trouble that I was expelled from school.
Present: Studying automotive
repair at ITE Balestier. After NS, I hope to study
more and be a successful person
I’m proud of: I went to
Vietnam on a Youth Expedition Project with CARE,
and I learnt so much. I’m also studying
something that I like!
What CARE did for me: They care
about me, want to know and help me. They helped
me get back to school again and taught me so much
about life.

Truant to Top Student

Sharifah
Past:
A lazy girl who hated school so much. Lonely,
shy, quiet, with very low self-esteem, I was the
weakest student in my class.
Present: Studying Info Communication
Technology at ITE College East (Simei), planning
to go on to Polytechnic for further study.
I’m proud of: Being the
top student in my school for the “N”
level exams & one of the top 24 students in
Singapore. Unbelievable!
What CARE did for me: CARE taught
and helped me discover my true self, how to set
and achieve my goals, gave me opportunities to
learn and experience so much more than I ever
dreamed of! Greatest of all, SUPPORT! Thank you,
CARE!

Cynicism to Community Involvement

Cheang Shu Ee
Past: Very lazy and “bo chap”
(not involved, not interested). My relationship
with my dad was also getting from bad to worse.
Present: Program assistant at CARE!
I also do freelance photography for wedding and
events. And it was CARE that introduced me to photography.
I love it! I have also volunteered at 4PM, YP (Young
PAP), etc. I look forward to studying counseling,
so I can help students the way I have been helped!
I’m proud of: Growing from
zero level to amateur photographer. Being an active
volunteer – this is really an achievement
for me!
What CARE did for me: They advised
and guided me, especially when I had no one else
to turn to. They taught me to reflect, be self reliant,
overcome my fears, and much more. They supported
me through difficult times and helped me find the
light that brought me out of my darkness.

more patient, ambitious and very active in community
service and volunteer work.
